Memory Techniques-1

Memory Techniques: A way 2 simplify your life

“Arise, awake and Stop not, till the goal you reach”.

There are numerous ways to show case our talents, skills and uniqueness. Whatever one does differently, it will have an imprint on the mind cells aka an image/ words in the correct sequence. Our mind is designed in such a way that it triggers those hidden things on time and whenever required. This amazing mechanism is called “memory” or “recollection” and the science is “mnemonics”.

In this blog I am presenting well know, useful, simple yet powerful mnemonic techniques that will sweep your mind. Follow these tested methods and catch a foretaste of your new persona.

What are the areas one should concentrate? Are these techniques a genuine and worth implementing? Why to waste or take a chance, we are ok with our regular memory?

Well the answer has to be tested by you!!! The end user is YOU and only YOU.  The following methods are not discovered by me. They are by the industry leader Tony Buzan (in his “USE YOUR MEMORY” book) who is popular with his Mind Maps.

Methods:

Greeks have rightly researched and passed on us the revolutionary mnemonic technique which can be read by their first letters: "SMASHIN SCOPE"

  1. Sensuality/ Synaesthesia: This method is based on the sensation or the feel of anything. E.g., vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch and kinesthesia.
  2. Movement: This makes use of the latest technology, 3-D. Remember the events or things as they move and make them three dimensional. So this is a blend of the rhythm and variation.
  3. Association: This is one of the best and basic techniques where in you should link or associate something to a stable word. E.g., PEG system or LINK system.
  4. Sexuality: Of course, we are all aware and good at this!?
  5. Humor: Make your image more funny or surreal; the better is your outcome.
  6. Imagination: The more your vivid imagination, the better is your memory. For the imagination is unlimited, where knowledge is limited.
  7. Number: This adds specificity and proficiency to your memory mind.
  8. Symbolism: Substitute a meaningful image for an ordinary or boring concept for a better recall. E.g., stop sign or light bulb.
  9. Colour: The more pleasant colors, the more memorable are your concepts or ideas.
  10. Order/ Sequence: This increases the brains possibilities of “random access”. E.g., little - big, grading, category etc.
  11. Positive images: Positive and pleasant images were better and memorable.
  12. Exaggeration: Exaggerate size like large and small, sound or shapes for a visible and quick memorability.
Hence, the above acronym, SMASHIN SCOPE confirms your ultimate first guide towards an astonishing new YOU.

Lesson 1:

THE NUMBER-SHAPE SYSTEM

This is the first of the PEG memory System. The PEG can be compared to the ward robe with number of hangers on which you hung clothes. The clothes may change and vary but the hangers remain the same and never change.

Here number and shape represents the hangers, while the things you wish to remember represents the clothes to be hung on the hangers.

In this system all you have to do is, think of images for each numbers from 1 – 20. Each image reminds the number as both have the same shape. Therefore, if you wish to remember the list of things in the numerical order, reverse numerical order and in random order then this method makes it easy.

Examples: number and their shape or look alike:

1: Paint brush, Penis, pencil, stick, Pen, candle, Pole, straw etc.
2: Swan, Duck
3: Heart, Breasts, Behind
4: Yacht, Table, Chair
5: Hook, Pregnant women
6: Hockey stick, Pipe, Cherry
7: Street light, Cliff, bounce back, cursor
8: Spectacles, shapely women.
9: balloon, Sperm, Tennis racquet.
10: Bat n Ball.
11: Rail track
12: Titanic ship.
13: Bow and Arrow
14: Flag.
15: Stomach
16: Elephant Trunk
17: Triangle
18: Hour Glass
19: Safety pin
20: Scooter

Here is the list of 1-10 Peg words as an example.

  1. Symphony.
  2. Prayer
  3. Water melon
  4. Volcano
  5. Motorcycle
  6. Sunshine
  7. Apple pie
  8. Blossoms
  9. Spaceship
  10. Field of wheat
Process of memorizing the list:

  1. For SYMPHONY: Imagine violinists playing SYMPHONY with STRAWS.
  2. PRAYER: The white SWAN with its wings upheld participated in PRAYER.
  3. Water in the melon city.
  4. VOLCANO: it is erupting furiously beneath the YACHT.
  5. MOTOR CYCLE:  you are driving the red motor cycle with a PREGNANT LADY to the hospital.
  6. SUN SHINE: Sun shine falling on the CHERRY’S making them bigger and juicy.
  7. APPLE PIE: The CLIFF is made of the apple pie.
  8. BLOSSOMS: The HOUR GLASS tells the time by the gentle flow of the tiny blossoms (flowers).
  9. SPACE SHIP: A BALLOON carrying the space ship out of Earth’s atmosphere.
  10. FIELD OF WHEAT: A bat cracks against the ball. And you see the ball sailing across endless fields of rhythmically waving golden Wheat.
Well, did you see the above example? They are included to indicate the kind of exaggeration, imagination, sensuality and creative thinking. The best way to practice is ask your friends, family or yourself. Ask them to read the list of 10 items with about 5-10 seconds pause between each. Make most of the word creative, colorful, exaggerated, or sexually linked on your internal screen. It is okay to get confused in the first instance. But before proceeding further, practice memorizing the shapes of the number and their association / linking.

And you may ask what if you are given a new list of items. That is very simple. Just remove the clothes aka the old list and replace them with new items to be hanged on the hangers.

I will post Lesson-2 shortly. Any comments or feed backs are most welcome..
